Working towards a sustainable future
Insuring and saving with Old Mutual means growing crops, growing jobs, growing a future.
What Sustainability means to Old Mutual

Sustainability is much more than just a plan for the future, it’s changing the world today. It’s investing in clean energy now, rather than waiting for our resources to disappear. It’s educating the youth of today to create the leaders of tomorrow and it’s creating and stimulating new businesses, new ideas and new opportunities that did not exist before.

The success of our customers, shareholders and partners is our success. We all have a part to play in shaping the world of tomorrow. We also recognise the interconnectivity between the economic, social, and environmental systems we operate in, and the global urgency to transform our collective growth path to be more socially inclusive, low carbon, and resource efficient. Our business response to sustainability is shaped by our core business activities and competencies, the material Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues impacting our business and our stakeholders, and a deep commitment to acting responsibly and treating all stakeholders fairly.

Gala Macs Macadamia Farm: Lilongwe

“Chuma chili mu mthaka” - There is richness in the soil, Malawian proverb

Declining tobacco sales have steered Malawi on an unexpected journey to find a new crop. The journey began when we recognised an incredible opportunity of shared value and responsible investment with Gala Macs Macadamia nut farm. The value behind the farm is that the Macadamia nut is a strong export option, with an established international market. And, it’s labour intensive requiring 1 247 fulltime jobs. In addition, the farm has bee hives that are nurtured by the local community.

The scale of Gala Mac farm offers Old Mutual a sustainable agricultural investment opportunity. We call this creating mutual futures, by investing in sustainable farming.

Supporting Entrepreneurship and ICT-related training for youth

With support from Old Mutual, 43 young people have completed their one-month-long training in entrepreneurship and ICT-related skills which included phone and home gadgets repair in Mzuzu.

Old Mutual invested MK7 million in the training which Sanwecka Tech Companions implemented in collaboration with Mzuzu City Council. On completion of the training, the youth were provided with start-up equipment as a way of empowering them to start their businesses.

Over the past two years, Old Mutual has invested over MK60 million in its entrepreneurship and skills development initiatives.
